Different patterns of myocardial iron distribution by whole-heart T2* magnetic resonance as risk markers for heart complications in thalassemia major.
2014
Background The multislice multiecho T2* cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) technique allows to detect different patterns of myocardial iron overload (MIO). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to verify the association between cardiac complications (heart failure and arrhythmias), biventricular dysfunction and myocardial fibrosis with different patterns of MIO in thalassemia major (TM) patients. Methods We considered 812 TM patients enrolled in the Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia (MIOT) Network. The T2* value in all the 16 cardiac segments was evaluated. Results We identified 4 groups of patients: 138 with homogeneous MIO (all segments with T2* < 20 ms), 97 with heterogene…
Impact of Myocardial Fibrosis on Left Ventricular Function Evaluated by Feature-Tracking Myocardial Strain Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Competitive …
2019
BACKGROUND To analyze the effect of myocardial fibrosis on left ventricular (LV) function evaluated by feature-tracking strain analysis by cine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in competitive male triathletes with normal ejection fraction (EF).Methods and Results:78 asymptomatic male triathletes with >10 weekly training hours (43±11 years) and 28 male age-matched controls were studied by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and cine CMR. Global and segmental radial, longitudinal and circumferential strains were analyzed using feature-tracking cine CMR. Focal non-ischemic LGE was observed in 15 of 78 triathletes (19%, LGE+) with predominance in the basal inferolateral segments. LVEF was normal …
Myocardial fibrosis by delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance and HCV infection in thalassemia major patients.
2010
Abstract Abstract 4265 Introduction. Delayed enhancement (DE) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) technique with intravenous administration of gadolinium (Gd) chelates contrast agents is the only validated non-invasive approach for detecting myocardial fibrosis (Mahrholdt H et al, Eur Heart J 2005). This technique has been confirmed safe in patients with hemoglobinopathies (Meloni A et al, Haematologica 2009). In thalassemia major (TM), myocardial fibrosis has been detected using the DE technique and a positive correlation with anti-HCV antibodies has been described (Pepe A et al, Heart 2009). However, HCV-induced cardiomyopathy is still controversial (Matsumori A et al. J Card Fail 2006). The…
Toenail cerium levels and risk of a first acute myocardial infarction: the EURAMIC and heavy metals study.
2006
The association between cerium status and risk of first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was examined in a case-control study in 10 centres from Europe and Israel. Cerium in toenails was assessed by neutron activation analysis in 684 cases and 724 controls aged 70 years or younger. Mean concentrations of cerium were 186 and 173 microg/kg in cases and controls, respectively. Cerium was positively associated with low socio-economic status, smoking, mercury, zinc and scandium (p0.001). Cases had significantly higher levels of cerium than controls after adjustment for age and centre (case-control ratio 1.074; 95% CI 1.002-1.151) and increased in further adjustment for other cardiovascular risk…
Decrease of CD4+ T Lymphocytes after myocardial infarction is related with extensive myocardial fibrosis
2013
Purpose: Myocardial fibrosis plays a potential role in left ventricular remodeling and patients' outcome. After myocardial infarction innate immune cells infiltrate infarcted area and replace necrotic tissue by fibrotic tissue. However the role of adaptive immunity, especially T cells, has not yet been investigated in this scenario. Methods: We studied 94 patients with a first STEMI treated with percutaneous revascularization. Leucocyte subsets and a wide variety of lymphocyte subtypes were determined in peripheral blood 24 h after reperfusion by means of flow cytometry. Infarct size and cardiac fibrosis were measured by late enhancement Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CRM) 1 week and 6 months …

Procollagen C-Proteinase Enhancer 1 (PCPE-1) is a marker of myocardial fibrosis and impaired cardiac function in a murine model of pressure overload
2021
Abstract(1)AimsProcollagen C-proteinase enhancer 1 (PCPE-1) is an extracellular matrix protein and a major regulator of fibrillar collagen biosynthesis. Previous work has shown that its abundance is often increased in the context of tissue repair and fibrosis. The present study was designed to evaluate its potential as a biomarker of myocardial interstitial fibrosis (MIF), a well-established pathogenic pathway leading to heart failure.(2)Methods and ResultsCardiac fibrosis was induced in rats using an optimized model of chronic pressure overload triggered by angiotensin II and Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). All treated animals suffered from heart hypertrophy and the increase in …
P80Cannabinoid receptor CB2 prevents development of heart failure in a murine model of pressure overload
2014
Purpose: Cardiac adaptation to pressure overload is associated with inflammatory reaction, which untreated leads to myocardial fibrosis and heart failure. We have recently demonstrated that endogenous cannabinoids and the cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) are activated and associated with persistent inflammation in hypertrophic myocardium of patients with aortic valve stenosis. Therefore, we investigated the role of the CB2 in a mouse model of pressure overload. Methods: Transverse aortic constriction was performed in CB2-/--mice and their wildtype littermates (CB2+/+; n=8-12/group). Taqman® RT-qPCR analysis was performed after 3 and 7 days. After M-mode echocardiography and Millar® pressure-vol…
Guanxin Danshen Formulation Protects against Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury-Induced Left Ventricular Remodeling by Upregulating Estrogen Rece…
2017
Background: Guanxin Danshen formulation (GXDSF) is a traditional Chinese herbal recipe recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia since 1995 edition, which consists of Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Dalbergiae odoriferae Lignum. Our previous research suggested GXDSF had positive effect on cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of GXDSF on myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury-induced left ventricular remodelling (MIRI-LVR). Methods: The effects of GXDSF on cardiac function were detected by haemodynamics and echocardiograms. The effects of GXDSF on biochemical parameters (AST, LDH and CK-MB) were analysed. H…
Hypoxia and myocardial remodeling in human cardiac allografts: a time-course study.
2009
Background: Cardiac allografts are known to develop myocardial fibrosis, which may be a cause of progressive cardiac dysfunction. Apart from the renin‐angiotensin and transforming growth factor- system, hypoxia has been proposed as an important player in the pathogenesis of fibrosis, but its significance remains unclear. This study examines the degree of myocardial fibrosis, cellular remodeling and hypoxic signaling over a time-course of 10 years after human cardiac allograft transplantation. Methods: Serial right ventricular biopsies of 57 patients were collected in 6-month intervals after cardiac transplant surgery for a total of 10 years to allow a retrospective longitudinal analysis. Ov…
